Senior Lawyer News

A Message from the Editor

This issue of the Senior Lawyer News includes articles on a number of different issues of interest to senior lawyers.

First, Colin J.S. Thomas, Jr., our chair, reports on some of the accomplishments of the Senior Lawyers Conference.

We continue our remembrances about deceased, distinguished senior lawyers, who exemplified the qualities so important to our profession and to our society: the Honorable William S. Moffett, Jr., by the Honorable George M. Cochran; and the Honorable William F. Parkerson, Jr., by the Honorable Ralph L. "Bill" Axselle, Jr. We hope that these lights from our past will guide our way in the future.

In a matter of topical interest to Virginia lawyers today, we present "The State of Law Firm Marketing: The Bates Decision and the Internet," by Debbie Monroe, vice president and general manager of FindLaw.

"Why The $41 Trillion Wealth Transfer Estimate Is Still Valid: A Review Of Challenges And Questions," by John J. Havens and Paul G. Schervish, reviews the validity of the $41 trillion estimate (in 1998 dollars), covering the 55-year period from 1998 through 2052. This is a matter of ongoing interest to lawyers who render (and who plan to render) legal services to those who are the transferors and the transferees of the wealth transfers.

Ellen Widen Kessler's article, titled "The Financial Impact of Divorces for Older Clients," gives important and unique considerations regarding the roles of lawyers who represent older clients in domestic relations matters.

Continuing with an interest of our distinguished former newsletter editor, Francis N. Crenshaw, we offer some help in maintaining and fulfilling important personal relationships in "A Grandparents' Guide For Family Nurturing & Safety," by T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., and Ann Brown.

The board of governors of the Senior Lawyers Conference encourages senior lawyers, as part of service to the profession and to the public, to volunteer to serve as panel members in the Virginia State Bar Fee Dispute Resolution Program. Information about the program is provided in this newsletter.

Please visit other parts of our Web site to find other attorney resources. There are documents designed to help a lawyer in planning for the protection of the interests of the lawyer and the lawyer's clients in the event of the lawyer's disability or death. Also, the Senior Citizens Handbook, available on our Web site, provides a wealth of useful material.
