Senior Lawyer Conference Presents
Retirement Planning Seminar for Lawyers


On May 8, 2003, at the Richmond Marriott, the Senior Lawyers Conference, under the leadership of Robert A. Cox, Jr., SLC seminar chair and program moderator, presented an outstanding seminar on retirement planning for lawyers. The program, that was also videotaped for later replay in Abingdon, Charlottesville, Richmond, Roanoke, Tysons Corner and Virginia Beach, was presented in cooperation with Virginia CLE and provided 5.5 MCLE credit hours, including 1 hour ethics credit. Peter J. Kenny, of Virginia CLE was the Seminar Director. The seminar, which carried out one of the core missions of the SLC, emphasized the importance of planning for lawyers in a number of areas.

In the morning session, Frank O. Brown, Jr., Esquire, of Henrico County, discussed various aspects of estate planning for lawyers and estate taxes. Leslie A.T. Haley, Esquire, of the VSB Ethics Counsel's Office, provided guidance on planning ahead, in order to protect the lawyer's and the client's interests in the event of the lawyer's disability or death. Mark G. Smith, of Capital Advisory Group, Inc., of Richmond, emphasized important considerations about insurance planning for retirement, including life settlements . Walter P. Smith, of BB&T Insurance Services, of Richmond, covered professional liability insurance, and particularly tail coverage issues. An entertaining and informative panel discussion on planning to exit the practice and related ethical considerations was presented by F. Warren Haynie, Jr., Esquire, of Lottsburg, James W. Morris III, Esquire, of Richmond, and Colin J.S. Thomas, Jr., Esquire, of Staunton, current SLC Chair.

The afternoon session was begun by Timothy H. Guare, Esquire, of Richmond, who outlined practical planning under the minimum distribution rules for IRA's and qualified plans. W. Richard Smith III, of Capital Advisory Group, Inc. of Richmond, concluded the program, emphasizing investment planning options for retirement.

The success of the seminar was best summed up by one of the attendees, who wrote, "This was the most informative Virginia CLE seminar I have attended in my many years (over 40) as a lawyer."
