Law in Society Scholarship

The Virginia State Bar’s Litigation Section and Communications Committee, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education, have been cosponsors of the Law in Society Essay Contest since its inception.

The competition was designed to increase awareness and appreciation of our legal system among high school students. The criterion for the competition is an essay in response to a hypothetical predetermined topic. Awards were made to students whose essays best demonstrate a superior understanding of the role and value of our legal system in our everyday lives.

The section provided financial support for the contest in 2016-2017, funding the Bar’s efforts to distribute the contest hypothetical throughout the Commonwealth and also funding prizes for the contest winners. Section members also participated as judges of the essays received during this year’s contest.

At the direction of the Virginia State Bar, this program was discontinued effective June 2017.
