In November 2008, our Section sent two of its members, Lee Livingston and Steve Emmert, to the Virginia State Bar’s Midyear Legal Conference in Puerto Rico, where they had an outstanding CLE presentation entitled, “The Bermuda Triangle of New Litigation Pitfalls:  Sanctions, Waivers and Pleadings.”  The Section is also pleased to have been chosen this year to present another seminar in November 2009 in Marbella, Spain on Winning Discovery Strategies.

Under the direction of our new Newsletter Editor, Joseph M. Rainsbury from Roanoke, our Section published three issues of the “Litigation News,” made up primarily of articles written by our board members.
In February 2009, the Litigation Section provided numerous articles for publication in the Virginia Lawyer Magazine, where our Section was highlighted.

Five Year Strategic Plan:
In April 2009, the Litigation Section completed its Five Year Strategic Plan for our Section.  The Long Range Planning Committee was headed up by Greg Haley, Vice Chair of the Section.

Bylaws Amendments:
The Litigation Section amended its Bylaws this year, with the major changes being the creation of a Treasurer as a separate position from Secretary, and the changing of our “Appellate Practice Subcommittee” to the “Appellate Practice Committee.”

Law in Society Contest:
In conjunction with the Virginia State Bar’s Publications office, and with the invaluable assistance from Rod Goggin, we had another successful year with this high school essay contest.  We received 113 entries from 22 high schools across the state.  The grand prize winner and his family attended the annual meeting in June and received his prize in person at the conclusion of the section’s CLE presentation.

Annual Meeting Workshop:
At the annual meeting in June, the Litigation Section, led by its Secretary, Robert Garnier, put on an outstanding seminar entitled “Stop Talking Like a Lawyer – The Lost Art of Communication.”

Appellate Practice Committee:
