Annual Report 2010-2011

Section Membership
The Litigation Section had 3,120 members on June 1, 2011.

Budget Allocation for 2010-11
The section was afforded a budget of $39,500 for fiscal 2011.

Publications
With Joseph M. Rainsbury at the lead, the Litigation Section continued quarterly publication of Litigation News, disseminated by email to section members and published on the section’s page at VSB.org. Beginning this year, for the benefit of our members, all past issues published on the Web are searchable through Google.

The VSB published The Revised Handbook on Appellate Advocacy in the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia, 2011 Edition, edited and revised by the Litigation Section and others through diligent leadership by Monica Taylor Monday. The handbook is now available online through the Litigation Section’s webpage, as well as in print. The section also continued planning a proposed trial handbook, for which an impact statement has been submitted to the VSB by past chair Gregory J. Haley. Bid proposals are also being considered.

Annual Meeting Program
Under Gary A. Bryant’s leadership, the section presented a well-attended continuing legal education workshop at the VSB Annual Meeting. Speakers for the workshop —  titled Litigation Experts: How to Pick Them, How to Prep Them, How to Preserve Them, and How To Present Them — included Gary Bryant, retired judge Thomas S. Shadrick, William F. Devine, and Stephen C. Swain.

The section also cosponsored with the Virginia Alternative Dispute Resolution Joint Committee a program, Can We Have a Conversation? Improved Communications Skills in Negotiation and Litigation.

Midyear Seminar
In 2010, Judges Rodham T. Delk Jr. and B. Waugh Crigler presented a CLE program on behalf of the section at the VSB’s Midyear Seminar. At the 2011 seminar in Athens, Greece, R. Lee Livingston, Judge B. Waugh Crigler, and Robert Garnier will present Making and Meeting Objections to Evidence at Trial — An Interactive Clinic.

Appellate Practice Committee
In March 2011, our section's Appellate Practice Committee presented a free CLE program in Richmond on How to Effectively Handle Your First (or Next) Appeal to the Court of Appeals of Virginia. Also made possible by the hard work of committee chair Monica Monday and with a number of judges participating, the CLE was well received, and a repeat presentation is being planned in the Roanoke area.

Law in Society Essay Contest
Together with the VSB’s Communications Committee, the Litigation Section again sponsored the Law in Society essay contest, with substantial work by Nancy M. Brizendine and Rodney A. Coggin. This year, 175 essays were submitted from throughout Virginia, with awards presented at the VSB Annual Meeting and at local school awards assemblies. The Litigation Section also invited local bar associations to participate in ceremonies in their areas.

Litigation Section officers elected for fiscal 2012 are Scott C. Ford, chair; Gary A. Bryant, vice chair; Barbara S. Williams, secretary; and Timothy E. Kirtner, treasurer. Robert Garnier is immediate past chair.
