2012 Litigation Section Annual Report

The Litigation Section had 3,120 members on June 1, 2012.
Budget for 2011-12
The section was afforded a budget of $43,730 for fiscal 2012.
Joseph M. Rainsbury continues to lead the Litigation Section quarterly newsletter, Litigation News, which is provided via email to section members and published on the section’s page at VSB.org. The Revised Handbook on Appellate Advocacy in the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia, 201L Edition, remains available online through the Litigation Section's webpage, as well as in print.
Annual Meeting Program
Under Tim Kirtner's leadership, the section presented a continuing legal education workshop at the VSB Annual Meeting titled “Demise of the Civil Jury Trial: Change for the Better?” Among the speakers for the workshop were Malcolm P. (Mic) McConnell III, Jennifer Lee Parrish, the Honorable Michael F. Urbanski and moderator Barbara S. Williams.
In 2011, Judge Waugh Crigler, Lee Livingston, and Robert Gamier presented a CLE program on behalf of the section at the VSB's Midyear Seminar. At the 21l2 Midyear Seminar to be held in Rome, Italy, Justice Lacy will present “Get Your Head Out of the Cloud - Explore the Effects of Globalization and Technology on the Practice of Law.”
Appellate Practice Committee
In January 2012, the section presented a free CLE in Roanoke on “How to Effectively Handle Your First (or Next) Appeal to the Court of Appeals of Virginia.”
Also under the leadership of Monica T. Day, the 2012 Appellate Summit was presented in Richmond on April 25. The six-hour MCLE program featured speakers Chief ]ustice of the Supreme Court of Virginia the Honorable Cynthia D. Kinser; Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Honorable William B. Traxler Jr.; and Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia the Honorable Walter S. Felton. Topics included effective use of amicus briefs, views on appellate advocacy from the most recently appointed judiciary members, ways to improve brief writing, a discussion by ]ustice Donald W. Lemons on appellate decision-making, and delivering an effective oral argument.
Law ïn Society Essay Contest
Lead by Nancy Brizendine, the Law in Society Essay Contest was again sponsored by the Litigation Section and the VSB's Communications Committee. This year 226 essays from 64 schools throughout Virginia were submitted, and awards were presented at local school awards assemblies.
Officers and New Members in2012-13
Litigation Section officers elected for 2012 are: Gary A. Bryant, chair; Barbara S. Williams, vice chair; Tim E. Kirtner, secretary; Kristan B. Burch, treasurer. Scott C. Ford is immediate past chair.
]ohn M. Oakey Jr. is a new member elected to the section’s board of governors.
