UPL Opinion Regarding Provision of Pro Bono Services
The VSB Corporate Counsel Section Board of Governors submitted a request for the VSB UPL Committee to render an opinion as to whether it is unauthorized practice of law for an attorney, licensed and admitted to the Virginia State Bar, to provide pro bono services through an independent non-profit legal services entity while employed full time as in-house corporate counsel. The "draft" opinion, which was prompted by the Section's request, was approved by the Virginia UPL Committee on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, and will be published in the next edition of the Virginia Lawyer Register with a request for comment. It concludes that provision of such services would not consitute the unauthorized practice of law. The Corporate Counsel Section's efforts were instrumental in securing this clarification in the interest of pro bono practice by in-house counsel.

“Corporate Counsel News” Returns as an Electronic Newsletter
It's been several years since the Corporate Counsel Section has published a print newsletter. For cost purposes, speed of production, and ease of consumption on your multiple screens, we are going all-electronic. The Board of Governors is thinking of calling it the Virginia Corporate Counsel Quarterly.
We will be sending a postcard soliciting email addresses for the small number of our membership for whom we do not already have email addresses. The VCCQ will come to your email inbox and will be posted on the section's newsletter page. It will benefit from your feedback. Please take a minute to let us know of any suggestions, to volunteer yourself (or maybe someone else) to author an article, and to let us know whether you think this informational service is meeting or missing the mark.
Four times a year we will update you on section activities, let you know about opportunities to engage, and ask for your contributions. Our planned content for each issue, subject to testing and your feedback, is:
- Content – Articles of interest to inhouse counsel, including articles by our membership and Recommended Reading from outside sources.
- Calendar – Section events and VSB events of interest to our membership.
- Calls for Input – We will ask for a few minutes and a few lines of email from you, our section members, in each VCCQ, to help inform and direct the section’s activities.
We have some great ideas in the hopper, and would love to hear yours. Please send topics for newsletter articles, contributing authors, and notable articles from elsewhere that you would recommend to other CC§ members, to email@example.com.
