Supreme Court of Virginia Approved Proposed Amendment to Rule 1.17 of the Rules of Professional Conduct
Sale of law practice: Lawyer can continue practicing, but not in same practice area. The Supreme Court approved an amendment to Rule of Professional Conduct 1.17, effective January 4, 2010, which would prohibit a lawyer who sold part of a law practice from engaging in the private practice of law in the same geographic area only with respect to the particular practice area that he or she sold.
