The Spottswood W. Robinson III and Robert R. Merhige Jr. Federal Courthouse opened in 2008. The seven-story structure is home to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia’s Richmond division, the Bankruptcy Court, the U.S. Trustee’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Marshal Service, and the General Services Administration. The GSA’s design goal for the building was to reflect “the importance of the federal courts in society and the dignity, enterprise, vigor and stability of the American government.” It is named for two federal judges who were key in the legal struggle for racial equality.
