This lesson plan helps to engage students in the discussion about balancing the student’s right to privacy concerning mental-health issues and the university’s right to protect its student body. Obviously, this discussion has been heightened by the recent tragedy at a state university. In that case, the student had been suffering from mental-health issues and the university was not made fully aware of them. However, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 protects handicapped students from discrimination at institutions receiving federal funds. The debate continues on both sides as to determining the line between protecting the student’s medical records and protecting the student body from a potentially dangerous student. This lesson will help you analyze that debate and come to conclusions about possible solutions.
