The Law in Society Award Competition is sponsored by the Virginia State Bar and its Litigation Section to increase awareness and appreciation of our legal system among high-school students. The criterion for the competition is an essay in response to a hypothetical on a predetermined topic. Awards go to students whose essays best demonstrate a superior understanding of the role and value of our legal system in our everyday lives.
A panel of volunteers from the Virginia State Bar will judge all entries. Judging will take place in two stages. The first round will determine the top three essays from each of ten regions in Virginia. Those entries will be designated finalists, and the authors will each receive a certificate of achievement and a dictionary and thesaurus set.
All finalists will be eligible for the Grand Prize awards, which will be determined by the second round of judging.
