Virginia State Bar E-News, April 2016

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking public comment on proposed advisory Legal Ethics Opinion 1884: Conflicts arising from a lawyer-legislator’s employment with a consulting firm owned by a law firm.

The Ethics Committee has approved proposed changes to Rules of Professional Conduct 1.6 and 3.3, which will be submitted to the council for consideration at its meeting on June 16 in Virginia Beach. The proposed amendments clarify the scope of the lawyer’s duty to reveal and remedy perjury by the client.

Space is still available at the webcast locations for the 12th Annual Indigent Criminal Defense Seminar Advanced Skills for the Experienced Practitioner.  Court appointed council and public defenders may register for the May 5 webcasts in Weyers Cave and Wytheville.

Online registration will be available soon for the 78th Annual Meeting, June 16-19, 2016, in Virginia Beach.

VSB awards:

Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons has been named the 2016 recipient of the William R. Rakes Leadership in Education Award by the VSB’s Section on the Education of Lawyers in Virginia.
Michael N. Herring has been named the 2016 recipient of the Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Award by the VSB Criminal Law Section. 
Carl J. Witmeyer II has been named the 2016 recipient of the Betty A. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award by the VSB’s Family Law Section.
