Virginia State Bar E-news, March 2016

The Supreme Court of Virginia has adopted the following amendments, effective March 1, 2016:

At its meeting on February 27, 2016, in Richmond, the Virginia State Bar Council approved amendments to the Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee policies and sent them to the Supreme Court of Virginia for its approval.

 

The council also approved funding for the Diversity Conference, which now will be included for approval in the 2016-17 budget proposal to the Court.

Registration is open for the pro bono webinar on representing “Special Immigrant Juvenile Status” clients in Virginia's J&DR Court and US Immigration Courts.

The following circuits will be holding elections for one or more seats on Council, the VSB's governing body:  2, 3, 4, 5, 13, 16, 17, 19, 20, 23, 26, 27 and 31.  If you are interested in serving on Council, e-mail a nominating petition to the executive director, Karen A. Gould, elections@vsb.org. Petition must be signed by not fewer than ten other members eligible to vote in the circuit, and shall be accompanied by a statement of qualifications not exceeding one hundred and fifty words (in Word format) and a digital photograph (head shot). Nominations must be filed in the office of the executive director on or before April 1.

Volunteers are needed to serve on the Virginia State Bar’s boards and committees. The Nominating Committee will refer nominees to the VSB Council for consideration at its June meeting.

Space is still available at the webcast locations for the 12th Annual Indigent Criminal Defense Seminar Advanced Skills for the Experienced Practitioner.  Court appointed council and public defenders may register for the May 5 webcasts in Weyers Cave and Wytheville.

Registration is open for the YLC Celebration of Women and Minorities in the Legal Profession Bench-Bar Dinner on March 23 at University of Richmond Jepson Alumni Center.

The Young Lawyers Conference  needs circuit representatives, program and committee chairs, and committee members/volunteers for many of its programs this bar year.

Registration is open for the April 25 VSB TECHSHOW at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

The 46th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, has video replays scheduled for March 29, 30 & 31 in several locations.

Coming this fall: Watch for the VSB’s new VirginiaFreeLegalAnswers pro bono website, sponsored by the ABA. Lawyers sign up to provide online answers to legal questions posted by low-income Virginians.
