Virginia State Bar E-News, February 2016

The Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking public comment on proposed amendments to Rules 1.6 and 3.3 clarifying a lawyer’s obligations when a client discloses an intent to commit perjury well in advance of trial.

The Supreme Court of Virginia has amended the registration statement form regarding the provision of legal services following the determination of a major disaster: Form 1. Registration Statement For Lawyer Engaging In Temporary Practice Following Determination Of Major Disaster.

The Supreme Court of Virginia has adopted amendments to:

Rule 5.5: Unauthorized Practice of Law; Multijurisdictional Practice of Law, effective February 1, 2016;
Rule 8.3: Reporting Misconduct, effective February 1, 2016; 
Paragraph 13: Procedure for Disciplining, Suspending, and Disbarring Attorneys, effective March 1, 2016;
Rule 1.1: Competence, effective March 1, 2016; 
Rule 1.6: Client Confidentiality, effective March 1, 2016. 

The 46th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, will be February 5 in Williamsburg and February 12 in Charlottesville.

Volunteers are needed to serve on the Virginia State Bar’s boards and committees. The Nominating Committee will refer nominees to the VSB Council for consideration at its June meeting.

President-elect Robinson seeks members for Virginia State Bar committees with terms commencing July 1, 2016.

The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline calls for nominations for district committee vacancies to be filled by the VSB Council in June.

Registration is open for the April 25 VSB TECHSHOW at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

Nominations are being sought for the following awards:

The Conference of Local Bar Associations Awards of MeritLocal Bar Leader of the Year Award, and Bar Association of the Year Award. The nomination deadline is April 29, 2016.
The General Practice Section Tradition of Excellence Award. The nomination deadline is March 21, 2016. 
The Special Committee on Access to Legal Services Oliver White Hill Law Student Pro Bono Award. The nomination deadline is March 25, 2016. 
The Special Committee on Access to Legal Services Virginia Legal Aid Award. The nomination deadline is March 25, 2016. 
The Young Lawyers Conference R. Edwin Burnette, Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year Award. The nomination deadline is April 1, 2016.

Registration is open for the February 19-20 Virginia Academy of Elder Law Attorneys 9th Annual UnProgram at the Boar's Head Inn, Charlottesville.

The annual Law in Society essay contest for high school students is accepting entries. Deadline is February 12.

Save the date for the YLC Celebration of Women and Minorities in the Legal Profession Bench Bar Dinner on March 23 at University of Richmond Jepson Alumni Center.
