Virginia State Bar E-News, December 2017

The Virginia State Bar’s Standing Committee on Legal Ethics has voted not to send proposed Legal Ethics Opinion 1888 to Council. After receiving many comments in support of and in opposition to the proposed LEO, the committee will consider other means of addressing the issues. The proposed LEO concerns a prosecutor’s duty to disclose evidence that tends to negate the guilt of the accused.
 
On November 13, 2017, the US Supreme Court’s electronic filing system began operation. 
 
Reminder: The MCLE reporting deadline is 4:45 p.m. December 15.
 
The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline calls for nominations for district committee vacancies to be filled by Council in June.
 
President-elect Heath seeks members for Virginia State Bar committees with terms commencing July 1, 2018.
 
Volunteers are needed to serve on VSB boards and committees beginning July 1, 2018. 
 
Registration is open for the December 5 First Day in Practice and Beyond CLE in Richmond.
 
Registration is open for the April 23, 2018, VSB TECHSHOW at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
 
At its meeting on September 15, 2017, the Clients’ Protection Fund board awarded $38,168.33 to 11 clients of lawyers who had been disbarred or suspended for dishonest conduct and to two clients of deceased lawyers.

The 48th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, is scheduled for February 2 in Charlottesville and February 9 in Williamsburg.
