PRO BONO SERVICE ENCOURAGED — As we begin a new year, bar members are reminded of the need for pro bono legal services and for contributions to the Virginia Law Foundation, legal aid, and other nonprofit legal services providers. A number of volunteer and public-service opportunities for attorneys and bar associations are listed on the Virginia State Bar’s Web site.
COMMENTS REQUESTED ON COUNCIL SIZE AMENDMENTS — Bar members are invited to comment on proposed amendments to Paragraph 5 regarding a circuit’s representation on council by February 1, 2008.
VOLUNTEER FOR A VSB COMMITTEE — Get involved with the Virginia State Bar by serving on a standing or special committee. Those interested should complete and return the 2008-09 VSB Committee Preference Form by March 17, 2008.
RULES OF SUPREME COURT OF VIRGINIA AMENDED — Several changes to Paragraph 5 regarding briefs and rehearing petitions have been adopted by the Supreme Court of Virginia and will become effective February 1, 2008.
THREE PROPOSED OPINIONS OPEN FOR COMMENTS — The VSB Standing Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law is seeking public comments on three proposed opinions: UPL 213, Attorney on Associate Status Representing Multiple Ownership Interests in Negotiation and Drafting of Easement; UPL 214, Non-Lawyer Representation, for Compensation, of a Party to Arbitration, and; UPL 215, In-house Counsel Based Outside Virginia Providing Legal Advice to Employer in Virginia. All comments are due by February 29, 2008.Updated: Jan 03, 2008
