October Designated Pro Bono Month by Governor McAuliffe

In conjunction with the Virginia State Bar’s Pro Bono Conference and Celebration to be held on October 18 in Charlottesville, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has designated October 2017 as Pro Bono Month.

In his proclamation, Governor McAuliffe notes that more than 80 percent of the civil legal needs of Virginia’s poor are unmet and that there are currently less than 140 legal aid lawyers in the state – a ratio of just one per every 7,237 low-income Virginians.

Despite these daunting odds, lawyers from around the state continue to donate their time to help lower-income Virginians, almost 50 percent of whom experience a legal problem each year.

Lawyers who are interested in pro bono may contact www.valegalaid.org for a number of options, or contact Karl Doss, director of Access to Justice for the VSB at doss@vsb.org or 804-775-0522.
