Kathleen M. (Katie) Uston Named Local Bar Leader of the Year

Kathleen M. Uston, an assistant bar counsel with the Virginia State Bar, is the recipient of this year’s Local Bar Leader of the Year Award from the Conference of Local Bar Associations.

The award recognizes continued dedication of bar leaders and close cooperation with the Virginia State Bar.

Uston has been an active member of the Alexandria bar since she graduated from George Mason University School of Law in 1991. She is a past president of the Alexandria Bar Association and the VSB Young Lawyers Conference. She has served on the VSB Council and Executive Committee and is a former vice chair of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Solo and Small Firm Committee. She recently completed her term as immediate past president of the Alexandria Bar Association Board of Directors and serves on the board as well as on the Program Committee of the National Organization of Bar Counsel.

In nominating Uston for the award, Dipti Pidikiti-Smith noted her extensive service to the Alexandria Bar Association dating to the 1990s, where as president she helped support the launch of the Resolver Program, through which volunteer attorneys work with pro se litigants in custody and visitation disputes. Uston has helped strengthen the relationship between the association and Legal Services of Northern Virginia and has collaborated with LSNV on various projects including working to implement the Jazz 4 Justice program in Alexandria, a portion of the proceeds from which go to benefit LSNV.

“Katie contributes a sense of integrity in the legal profession, promotes collegial relationships among the association’s members and involvement in the bar and responds to the legal needs within the community,” Pidikiti-Smith wrote. “Katie has inspired and motivated me and peers to service through her leadership.”

The award will be presented June 13 during the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach.
