Highlights of the February 25, 2017, Virginia State Bar Council Meeting
At its meeting on February 25, 2017, in Richmond, the Virginia State Bar Council heard the following significant reports and took the following actions:
Clients’ Protection Fund
The council unanimously approved amendments to the CPF rules. The amendments outline the purpose, funding, authority, and administration of the CPF. The amendments also improve the structure and organization of the rules of procedure that outline the administration of the CPF, including the procedure for processing claims. The purpose of the amendments is to clarify the authority for the CPF as well as to facilitate understanding of the CPF for both VSB members and the public.
Amendments to Rules 7.1-7.5
The council approved, by a vote of 65 to 1, proposed amendments to Rules 7.1-7.5 of the Rules of Professional Conduct that govern lawyer advertising. The proposed amendments will be presented to the Supreme Court of Virginia for its review and approval. The proposed changes to Rules 7.1, 7.4, and 7.5 arose from a need to simplify and modernize the lawyer advertising rules in light of changes caused by the rise of Internet marketing and communications.Updated: Mar 17, 2017
