“Forever Tree” Will Honor Chief Justice Hassell
Justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia, members of the Virginia State Bar, and other dignitaries will dedicate a “forever tree” in honor of former Chief Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell Sr. on the state capitol grounds on April 24 at noon. The dedication ceremony will mark the culmination of nearly two years of work by members of the Senior Lawyers Conference of the VSB.
“Chief Justice Hassell was a ground-breaking jurist who deserves permanent recognition by the citizens of the commonwealth,” said Robert L. Calhoun, chair of the Senior Lawyers Conference. “We wanted to honor him for commitment to the rule of law and for his unwavering support for the role of senior lawyers in the bar.”
Funds for the tree came from The Virginia Bar Association and the Senior Lawyers Conference. The tree dedication will be in conjunction with the 2012 Chief Justice’s Pro Bono Summit sponsored by the VBA.
The ceremony will be near the Bell Tower at 9th and Franklin streets. Scheduled to attend are Chief Justice Cynthia D. Kinser and the justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, The Virginia Bar Association President Hugh M. Fain III, former American Bar Association President Robert Grey, and legal aid officials from across the state.
