Virginia State Bar E-News, March 2015

New Virginia State Bar ID Cards will be mailed to all active members beginning later this week.

Effective May 1, 2015, the Supreme Court of Virginia adopted Rule 5.8: Procedures for Notification to Clients When a Lawyer Leaves a Law Firm or When a Law Firm Dissolves.

After two amendments from the floor, the VSB Council approved and will present to the Supreme Court of Virginia for its approval proposals to amend Rules 1.1 (Competence) and 1.6 (Confidentiality) of the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct. The amended rules are being drafted.

The Council approved and will present to the Supreme Court of Virginia for its approval the following amendments to the Court’s rules:

  • Paragraph 13.4: Standards for Minimum Malpractice Coverage When Disciplinary Charges Heard by a Three-Judge Panel Result in a Finding of Criminal Conduct Involving Loss of Client Property
  • Paragraph 13-4E: Establishment of District Committees

The following circuits will be holding elections for one or more seats on Council, the VSB's governing body:  4, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 23, 28, and 30.  If you are interested in serving on Council, e-mail a nominating petition to the executive director, Karen A. Gould, elections@vsb.org. Petition must be signed by not fewer than ten other members eligible to vote in the circuit, and shall be accompanied by a statement of qualifications not exceeding one hundred and fifty words. Volunteers are needed to fill vacancies on the VSB’s boards and committees. Please submit nominations, along with a brief resume, by March 27 to nominations@vsb.org.

Space is still available in the webcast locations for the 11th Annual Indigent Criminal Defense Seminar Advanced Skills for the Experienced Practitioner. You may register for the May 1 event for webcasts in Weyers Cave and Wytheville. 

The 45th Annual Criminal Law Seminar, sponsored by the VSB Criminal Law Section and Virginia CLE, has video replays scheduled for March 24, 25 & 31 in several locations.

The 2015 Midyear Legal Seminar, which is paid for solely by the participants and not by bar dues, is headed to Jerusalem, Israel, November 8-15. Deadline for registration is April 1. See the VSB’s Midyear Seminar website for registration form and CLE details.
