The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline is seeking comments on proposed changes to Part 6 § IV ¶ 13-24 regarding reciprocal discipline. The comment deadline is August 6.

The Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline has also approved a proposal to revise Virginia Code Section 54.1-3935, which provides the procedure for an attorney or the Virginia State Bar to demand that an attorney disciplinary matter proceed before a three-judge circuit court in lieu of a district committee or the disciplinary board of the Virginia State Bar.

The Virginia Access to Justice Commission seeks comments on proposed changes to Part 6 § IV ¶ 18 regarding self-reporting of pro bono services. The comment deadline is August 31.

The Executive Committee seeks comments on proposed amendments to Paragraph 13.1 regarding suspension for failure to complete the professionalism course. The amendments would authorize the Virginia State Bar executive director to grant, for good cause, an extension request from a member who fails to complete the Professionalism Course by the deadline. The comment deadline is September 1.

The Judicial Council of Virginia seeks comments on proposed changes to the Uniform Fee Schedule Guideline for Commissioners of Accounts, and amendments to the Code of Virginia regarding the fee for a Statement in Lieu of Settlement of Account. The comment deadline is August 19.

The Standing Committee on Legal Ethics is seeking public comment on proposed advisory Legal Ethics Opinion 1886Duty of partners and supervisory lawyers in a law firm when another lawyer in the firm suffers from significant impairment. The comment deadline is September 9.

The Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board will hear Catherine Ann Lee’s reinstatement petition on September 23.

The 17th Circuit will hold an election for one seat on Council, the VSB's governing body, for an unexpired term ending June 30, 2018. If you are interested in serving on Council and your VSB address of record is in the 17th Circuit, e-mail a nominating petition to the executive director, Karen A. Gould, elections@vsb.org. Petition must be signed by not fewer than ten other members eligible to vote in the circuit, and shall be accompanied by a statement of qualifications not exceeding one hundred and fifty words and a digital photo (headshot). Nominations must be filed in the office of the executive director on or before August 19.

Volunteers are needed to serve on the Virginia State Bar’s boards and committees. The Nominating Committee will refer nominees to the VSB Council for consideration at its October meeting. 

The Special Committee on Access to Legal Services seeks nominations for the Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award. Nominations must be received by August 19.

Save the date: the Special Committee on Access to Legal Services will hold its annual Pro Bono Conference and Celebration on Wednesday, October 26, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Hampton Hotel Convention Center & Spa.
