The Supreme Court of Virginia has adopted amended Rule of Professional Conduct 1.10: Imputed Disqualification: General Rule.

The Standing Committee on Legal Ethics has issued three Legal Ethics Opinions as final.

  • LEO 1880: Obligations of a court-appointed attorney to advise his indigent client of the right of appeal following conviction upon a guilty plea; duty of court-appointed attorney to follow the indigent client’s instruction to appeal following a guilty plea when the attorney believes the appeal would be frivolous.
  • LEO 1882: Conflict between criminal clients when one client expresses a desire to testify against the other.
  • LEO 1883: Ethical obligations of a lawyer for a chapter 7 bankruptcy petitioner in handling fixed fees advanced by the client.

Volunteers are needed to serve the Virginia State Bar’s boards and committees. The Nominating Committee will refer nominees to the VSB Council for consideration at its October meeting. 

The Special Committee on Access to Legal Services is seeking nominations for the Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award.

The MCLE interim report will be release this month. Now is the time to check your online record and plan your MCLE compliance. Apply now for any non-approved course that you have attended. The MCLE compliance deadline is October 31, 2015.

Save the date: the Special Committee on Access to Legal Services will hold its annual Pro Bono Conference and Celebration on October 21 at the Doubletree by Hilton Williamsburg Hotel.

Ballots for the open 4th Circuit seat on the VSB Council will be e-mailed to eligible voters on Monday, August 10, accompanied by statements of qualifications and the candidates’ pictures.
