MCLE deadline approaching – Attorneys must complete 12 CLE hours, including 2 hours in ethics/professionalism, by October 31 to avoid paying a $100 non-compliance fee. Go to the Member’s Area Login to check your current MCLE or certify course attendance. The new limitation on prerecorded MCLE programs has been postponed until the compliance year ending October 31, 2012.
Membership compliance deadline – The 2010-2011 membership renewal obligations must be met prior to October 8, 2010, to avoid suspension of your license and assessment of reinstatement fee(s). All outstanding items must be physically received (postmark will NOT be considered) in the Virginia State Bar office prior to October 8, 2010. Call the Membership Department with any questions (804) 775-0530.
Comments sought on Supreme Court Rule 5:21 amendments– The Advisory Committee on Rules of Court is seeking public comment on proposed amendments to Va. Sup. Ct. Rule 5:21. Deadline for comment: April 1, 2011.
Two LEOs issued as final – The Legal Ethics Committee has issued opinions on LEO 1802, regarding advising clients on the use of lawful undisclosed recording, and LEO 1849 regarding the ethical issues of lawyers testifying under oath in court to debts owed by the client.

Permanent bar cards coming– In December, VSB members with active, active/Virginia corporate counsel, active/military legal assistance attorney, judicial, and emeritus status will receive permanent bar cards. Active members have received their interim bar cards with an expiration of 12/31/2010. Associate members have already received their permanent bar cards
