VSB Council highlights, October 15 – At its meeting on October 15, 2010, in Charlottesville, the Virginia State Bar Council voted to pursue legislation to strengthen UPL laws and recommended amendments to the Rules of Virginia Supreme Court that govern MCLE and multijurisdictional practice.
VSB Council election result – George W. Marget III has been elected to represent the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit on the VSB Council. The seat was previously held by John D. Sharer, who resigned due to a change in his address of record.
MCLE reporting deadline is December 15, 2010 – The MCLE Form 1, End of Year Report, will be mailed by November 8. Certifying attendance online posts the results immediately to your MCLE record. See Form 1 instructions.
LEO 1854 issued as final – Legal Ethics Opinion 1854 addresses settlement negotiations in a criminal case.
The VSB Bankruptcy Law Section will present a live seminar, “Mastering Complex Issues in Bankruptcy: Five Years After BAPCPA,” on November 19 in Richmond. Video replays will run in six locations on December 7. (6.5 CLE credits)
Permanent bar cards coming – In December, VSB members with active, active/Virginia corporate counsel, active/military legal assistance attorney, judicial, and emeritus status will receive permanent bar cards. If you have paid your 2010-11 dues you should have received your interim bar card with an expiration of 12/31/2010. Associate members who paid their dues have already been sent their permanent bar cards.
ALPS Risk Manager, Richmond – ALPS, the VSB-endorsed lawyers’ professional liability carrier, has a new opening in Richmond for a Virginia-focused risk manager.
VBA Veterans Initiative – Sign up to volunteer legal services for Virginia National Guard members returning from overseas deployment or donate to support a Veterans Fundraiser for the Veterans Benefits Clinic at William & Mary Law School.
