Highlights of February Council Meeting — Proposed rule and regulatory changes were acted upon by the Virginia State Bar Council at its meeting February 28, 2009.
5th Annual Indigent Criminal Defense Seminar — This free program is on Friday, April 3, 2009, and open to all VSB members who defend Virginia’s indigent persons accused of crimes in Virginia. A live program in Richmond will be webcast to Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave and the Wytheville Meeting Center. Space is limited and walk-ins are not accepted, so please see VSB.org for registration information.
Spain Planned as Backdrop for 2009 Midyear Legal Seminar — Earn nine hours of CLE credits in Marbella during the Midyear Legal Seminar, November 9-16, 2009. Detailed registration information is now available.
Bar Leaders Institute — The BLI will feature leadership ethics by Terry L. Price of the Jepson School for Leadership Studies and association governance by Bob Harris of the Nonprofit Center. Register now for the April 15th seminar in Richmond.
Insurance Payment Notification — The VSB Public Protection Task Force has recommended a statute that would require insurance companies to notify claimants when the company issues a check of $5,000 or more to settle a liability case. The American Bar Association recommends payee notification to deter lawyers from stealing and to detect thefts sooner. The VSB Council will consider the proposal in June.
Pro Bono Conference — “Coming Home in Lean Times: Addressing Legal Needs of Warriors and Ex-Offenders” is the theme of the VSB Pro Bono & Access to Justice Conference to be held April 20-21, 2009, in Richmond.
Military Pro Bono Assistance — The Military Law Section of the VSB is recruiting attorney volunteers to assist needy military members and their families who could benefit from legal services beyond those currently available to them.
