VSB Ethics Hotline now accepts questions by e-mail – Lawyers can now use e-mail to submit questions to the Virginia State Bar Ethics Hotline.
Nominations sought for VSB volunteers – Members are needed to serve on the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary and the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education boards and as VSB Council members at large. The deadline for nominations is September 7, 2010, for submission to the council at its October meeting.
Public comment sought on MCLE proposal – The Task Force on Paragraph 17 proposes that the Virginia State Bar Council be given authority to reject regulatory decisions by the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board. The proposal also would increase the number of MCLE Board members required to pass a proposed new rule or amendment. Comment deadline is September 15, 2010.
MCLE Board postpones effective date of amended regulations – The Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board has postponed until November 1, 2011, a requirement that four hours of annual MCLE be in the form of “live interactive” programming.
Comment sought on multijurisdictional practice changes – At its October meeting, the Virginia State Bar Council will consider proposed Paragraph 13 amendments that establish procedures for disciplining lawyers who are not members of the Virginia bar but who are authorized to conduct a limited practice here. Comment deadline is September 15, 2010.
Supreme Court of Virginia to review proposed amendments – The Standing Committee on Legal Ethics proposes an amendment to Rule 1.15, Safekeeping Property, and proposes modifications to Paragraph 20 that include elimination of the regulations for the approval of financial institutions that serve as depositories for attorney trust accounts in Virginia.
Web access to Supreme Court of Virginia forms – Selected circuit and district court forms for VSB Members to complete online and print are now available in the member portal under Forms and Downloads.
UPL Committee warns of immigration consultant fraud – The Virginia State Bar Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee has launched a public awareness campaign to warn people about unqualified immigration consultants. The committee also is seeking authority from the VSB Council to request legislation to strengthen UPL law. Educational materials are available on the VSB website.
Permanent bar cards coming soon – This year, Virginia State Bar members with active, active/Virginia corporate counsel, associate, active/military legal assistance attorney, and emeritus status will receive permanent bar cards.
Dues delinquency fees assessed – VSB members who did not meet their annual dues requirements by July 31 have been assessed $50 per unmet requirement.
