President Blank reports $5 M restored to VSB budget, thanks bar volunteers
“I am pleased to report that the General Assembly has restored $5 million to the Virginia State Bar’s budget — an amount that represents the bar’s unspent cash reserve. Governor Robert F. McDonnell had proposed that the $5 million — all of which was contributed through dues and fees assessed to lawyers — be transferred from the bar’s special revenue fund to the General Fund of the Commonwealth. This transfer would have set a disturbing precedent that would have hampered the operation of the bar to regulate the legal profession and protect the public for years to come.
“I cannot express thanks enough to the dedicated members of the bar who wrote or called their legislators, and to the Virginia Bar Association, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and many other voluntary bar associations that helped in the effort to have the money restored.
“I am pleased also that the General Assembly’s budget also funds twenty-one judgeships that the legislature froze in its 2010 session. Candidates for vacant judgeships will be interviewed on April 5, to be considered for the assembly’s reconvened session.”
