Welcome Letter

TO: All Newly Licensed Virginia Attorneys

Congratulations on passing the bar exam and welcome to the ranks of Virginia's attorneys! I have the honor this year of being the president of the Young Lawyers Conference, to which you now belong. We are a dynamic group of attorneys comprised of those under the age of 36 or who have been in practice less than three years.

The Young Lawyers Conference offers nationally recognized services to Virginia's citizens and the bar through a number of committees. These include the Professional Development Conference, which provides inexpensive CLE programming targeted towards new and mid-level attorneys; the Celebration Bench-Bar Dinner, which honors newly elected and elevated women and minority judges; the Emergency Legal Services committee, which provides legal services to victims of natural disasters; the Domestic Violence Safety Project, which widely distributes safety and legal information to victims or potential victims of domestic violence; the Immigration Outreach Committee, which strives to educate lawyers and judges about various aspects of immigration law; and the Wills for Heroes program, which provides free wills, powers of attorney, and advanced medical directives to Virginia's first responders.

For our membership, the YLC publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Docket Call, which details the work of the conference and provides valuable information tailored to new attorneys just like you, including an Ethics Corner, addressing conundrums faced uniquely by Virginia's newly licensed attorneys.

Also, mark your calendars early. You will not want to miss the VSB Annual Meeting, to be held June 16–18, 2011, in Virginia Beach. The Annual Meeting is devoted to you — offering CLE programs of special interest to Virginia's attorneys, as well as a host of social and networking events.

The programs mentioned above are only a very small handful of the great programs with which you can become involved. Check out our new and improved website at www.VaYoungLawyers.com — easily navigable and full of information, photographs of recent YLC events and programs, and offering online volunteer sign up forms and a complete list of all of our committees and other volunteer opportunities.

I invite you to become an active member of the Young Lawyers Conference. Our strength absolutely depends on our volunteers. Volunteering through the YLC is incredibly rewarding, and it’s also a great way to meet and get to know other young lawyers from across the Commonwealth. If you want to get involved (or if you think you might want to get involved), please contact me at (202) 551-1809 or carsonsullivan@paulhastings.com or the YLC Membership Chair, Nathan Olson, at (703) 934-1480 or nolson@cgglawyers.com??.
