Welcome Letter

TO: All Newly Licensed Virginia Attorneys

Congratulations on passing the bar exam and welcome to the ranks of Virginia's attorneys!

My name is Dan Gray, and I am honored to serve this year as President of your Young Lawyers Conference, a dynamic group of attorneys comprised of those under the age of 36 or who have been in practice less than 3 years.

The Young Lawyers Conference, of which you are now a member, offers invaluable and nationally recognized services to Virginia's citizens and bar through a number of committees.  These include the Emergency Legal Services committee, which most recently was called into action in the wake of Hurricane Katrina; the Domestic Violence Safety Project, which widely distributes safety and legal information to victims or potential victims of domestic violence; the Immigration Outreach committee, which strives to educate lawyers and judges about various aspects of immigration law; and the Wills for Heroes program, which provides free wills, powers of attorney, and advanced medical directives to Virginia's first responders.

For our membership, the YLC publishes a quarterly newsletter, the Docket Call, which details the work of the Conference and provides valuable information tailored to new attorneys just like you, including an Ethics Corner, addressing conundrums faced uniquely by Virginia's newly licensed attorneys.

And you will not want to miss the upcoming Annual Meeting, to be held June 19 – 21, 2008 in Virginia Beach. The Annual Meeting is devoted to you — offering CLE programs of special interest to Virginia's attorneys, as well as a host of social and networking events. The programs mentioned above are only a very small handful of the great programs with which you can become involved. Check out our Web site at www.VaYoungLawyers.org — easily navigable and full of information, photographs of recent YLC events and programs, and offering on-line volunteer sign up forms - for a complete list of all of our Committees and other volunteer opportunities.

Then, choose how you can get involved.  A dedication to bar service not only enhances our profession, but also the lives of the many people we touch through our good works.

Sincerely,

Daniel L. Gray
