Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Department

The Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Department administers the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia pertaining to the annual continuing legal education requirement for all active attorneys in Virginia (Part Six, Section IV, Paragraphs 17 and 13.2). The department responds to inquiries from attorneys, law firms and course sponsors regarding compliance issues and course offerings. The department works closely with the MCLE Board which was appointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia to implement the Rule of Court and MCLE regulations. The MCLE Board develops rule and regulation changes. It reviews individual course applications and determines course approval, where appropriate; and considers waiver/extension requests from attorneys. The board also approves accredited sponsors.

The department oversees the annual compliance process for all active attorneys, issuing year-end reports and managing the suspension and reinstatement processes for those attorneys who fail to comply with the annual requirement in a timely manner. The department coordinates with the Membership Department to advise attorneys and circuit court judges/clerks of the suspensions and reinstatements.

The VSB website includes a secure Member Login area for Virginia State Bar members only. This is a point of access to Fastcase legal research resources and other member services, including a variety of forms and downloads; the online Virginia Lawyer Directory; real-time access to your MCLE record; and an electronic means to update your official address of record.
