70th Annual Meeting

“Cleaning Up the Stress Mess”

Sponsored by the Virginia Law Foundation and the VSB Lawyers Malpractice Insurance Committee

Saturday, June 21, 9:45 a.m. — Cavalier Beach Club

Following the General Session on Saturday morning, join Sean Carter, of Mesa, Arizona, who will share his insights for a more stress-free career! In nearly a decade of law practice after graduating from Harvard Law School, Sean Carter has represented such clients as GNC, Experian, The Boston Beer Company, Homeside Lending, Safelite Auto Glass, J. Crew and many others. In 2002, Mr. Carter left the practice of law to pursue a career as the country's foremost (and perhaps only) Humorist at Law.

Have you ever found yourself so stressed out at work that you've had to lock yourself in your office and say the Serenity Prayer? "Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things that I can not change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom not to stab opposing counsel in the parking lot." If so, then perhaps you need to hear Sean Carter's tips on how to clean up the stress mess.

Let's face it, being a legal professional is not easy. The demands of dealing with judges, clients, and opposing counsel can make even the most balanced person want to go "legal." In Cleaning Up the Stress Mess, Mr. Carter draws on his experience in both law firms and in-house legal departments to share three-steps to a more stress-free career:

Get a Clue — The first step to effectively managing stress is to understand its source

Get a Grip — You can't always control the circumstances at work, but you can get a grip on your reaction to them

Get a Life — Finding a passion outside of your job can be the greatest antidote to anxiety
