Christopher R. Fortier

Welcome to the Young Lawyers Conference website!

All of us have a purpose to serve our fellow professionals and our communities.  While there are many choices of organizations for you to reach your potential, the Virginia State Bar (VSB) Young Lawyers Conference offers a free launchpad to build the skills you need to become an effective lawyer, community servant, and leader in the profession.  We are one of four conferences of the VSB and the only group that has membership to every Virginia licensed lawyer under the age of 36 or who have been admitted as active, practicing members of their first bar for fewer than three years.  The Young Lawyers Conference is proud to serve its more 10,000 members and consists of leadership focused on serving young lawyers.

The Young Lawyers Conference has the following purposes:

  • to serve as a vehicle through which younger members of the Bar can exert a more direct influence upon the activities of the Bar;
  • to promote, uphold, and elevate the standards of honor, integrity, and competence in the legal profession; and
  • to assist the Bar’s Council (governing body) in improving the legal system and the responsiveness of the profession to the public.

We serve the public and our members.  Are you interested in the Conference’s activities? Follow the “Getting Involved” link.  Our YLC List Serve serves as one of the best ways for you to keep up with our news and events.  Don't forget to follow us on facebook, twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Youtube, and Tumblr.

Our programs and initiatives happen because our members volunteer their time – on top of busy law practices and family lives – to serve the profession and the public.  As our Conference has evolved, our public-service programs have expanded to now serve children and families, the elderly, the indigent, community first responders, minorities, and the sick and recuperating.  Our member-service programs help attorneys just starting out, those changing jobs or practice areas, and those who aren’t young but appreciate our quality, topical programs. We are always looking to expand our reach within the profession and the community and will work with you to build your idea into a program or project that will fulfill needs of young lawyers and the community.

We share news and events through the email list noted above, this site, social media, and our award-winning newsletter, Docket Call.  If you’re a Conference member but aren’t yet involved in our programs, we’d love to learn about your interests and connect you with a YLC program that needs assistance.  Laura O'Brien (, a YLC Board Member, oversees member involvement and should be your first point of contact.  Please submit our volunteer form and we will get in touch with you.

I look forward to serving you this bar year and hope to serve you in a way that positively affects our community.  Thank you, members, for your service and for making our Conference what it is!

All My Best,

Chris Fortier
