We look forward to bringing you another annual Minority Prelaw Conference in Northern Virginia! This conference sheds light on the process of law school, life of a law student, and what to expect as a practicing lawyer.

We will have many fantastic panels including preparing for law school, the LSAT, surviving law school and the bar exam, and making a career in the law. The panelists will provide you with advice and tools to guide you into a career in the law. Lunch will be provided.

Nuts & Bolts of Defensive Asylum for Unaccompanied Minors with an Emphasis on Gang-based Claims

June 2, 2016

12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Admission: One Pro Bono case/$75 or $100 (if not able to take pro bono case)

The Immigrant Outreach Committee, through its Pro Bono CLE Series, aims to narrow the Justice Gap in Virginia by supporting and increasing immigration pro bono work by Virginia attorneys. Residents of and around the Northern Virginia area need the help of attorneys to successfully navigate the immigration system. However, it is often the case that individuals, families, and increasingly more unaccompanied minors fleeing their countries of origin due to fear of persecution, lack the resources to hire an immigration attorney. By volunteering to take just one case on a pro bono basis, you can significantly improve their chances of success and help narrow the Justice Gap in Virginia.

The Immigrant Outreach Committee, in conjunction with Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), presents this dynamic CLE addressing the nuts and bolts of the defensive asylum process for unaccompanied minors with an emphasis on gang-based asylum claims. This CLE will supply you with the legal training you need to effectively represent your non-citizen client in your next, or perhaps first, defensive asylum case. This CLE will provide an overview of the federal immigration system as it concerns defensive asylum for unaccompanied minors, explain the procedures and requirements for applying for asylum, include an in-depth discussion on viable Particular Social Group constructions for gang-based claims, offer best practices for working with unaccompanied children and adults, and explore ethical considerations in representing clients in asylum cases. There is no requirement that you take a pro bono case if you attend this CLE, although you are encouraged to do so and will be provided with information regarding how you might volunteer with KIND.
