Rule of Law Day

March 29, 2017

We invite you to participate in the Rule of Law/Students Day at the Capitol program on Wednesday, March 29th, 2017. As in the past, approximately 300 middle and high schools students from the Richmond and Henrico Schools will participate.

This program is a collaborative effort between numerous Bar groups including the Virginia State Bar’s Young Lawyers and Diversity Conferences, the Virginia Law Foundation, the Virginia Bar Association’s Rule of Law Project, the Communities in Schools Program of the Richmond and Henrico Public Schools, and the Richmond and Chesterfield Sheriff's Departments. The program uses teachers, lawyers, judges, and law enforcement officers to provide an interactive experience about the rule of law in their daily lives, allowing them to understand the need to preserve and protect the rule of law as the foundation for the rights and freedoms we enjoy.

The program will open with perspectives on the Rule of Law provided by leaders representing the three branches of government and other special guests. Following this segment, the students will be divided into two groups; high school students will participate in an hour long “Rule of Law/Fact Pattern Scenario” discussion facilitated by some of you, and middle schoolers will travel across the street for a presentation at the Supreme Court of Virginia. Then the groups will switch places and the discussion groups/address will be repeated.
