Military Law Section
Matthew W. Smith, chair
In July 2010, the Military Law Section had 254 members.
The budget for fiscal 2010-11 was $3,360.
Over the past year, the section has been busy. Its board of governors held quarterly meetings, in addition to an annual membership and business meeting at the Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach and an annual section continuing legal education seminar in May. The CLE seminar is put on at no charge to participants, and consists of a half-day of timely presentations on topics of significance to any attorney with an interest in military law. In recent years, Marine Corps Base Quantico has generously allowed us to use its top-notch facilities. In May of this year, the course included presentations by Christopher M. Dunne and Dwain Alexander II on Servicemembers Civil Relief Act developments, by Edward L. “Ned” Davis on legal ethics associated with social networking media, and by Neal A. Puckett and Haytham Faraj on dealing with the media in high profile military justice cases.
The section also completed planning and preparation for a telephonic CLE to be held on October 14, 2011, that will be jointly sponsored with the Family Law Section, on the topic of military divorce and family law matters.
The section publishes its Military Law News which is delivered electronically to section members and others with a professional or personal interest in military law matters. The newsletter is also available in PDF and HTML formats on the section's webpage.
Officers elected for 2011-12 were Christopher M. Dunne, chair; Ernest A. Harper, vice chair; and Cynthia H. Norwood, secretary. In addition, two board of governors vacancies were filled with Michael K. Murphy and Robert W. Best.
