Mission Statement Of The Special Committee On Lawyer Referral

The mission of the Special Committee on Lawyer Referral is to oversee the Virginia Lawyer Referral Service in order to: provide the public with a quick and efficient method of referral to an attorney or other appropriate resource able to assist the individual with their legal or law-related problems; and to encourage the practice of "preventive law" by solving many potential problems before they become more serious. Additionally, oversight includes: assisting those individuals with legal problems, who might otherwise consult unauthorized practitioners, to receive immediate referral to qualified, competent, fully licensed practitioners in their specific area of need; and to bring the public generally to a better understanding of the law and the legal profession.

In performing its responsibilities, the committee also establishes policies and procedures which may include membership and consultation fees, marketing strategies, community outreach, budget planning and membership guidelines.

The committee's work may include other specific assignments or requests in its general area of responsibility from the bar's officers, the executive committee, or council.

At the end of each bar year on June 30, the chair of the committee shall submit an annual report outlining the work and accomplishments of the committee during the preceding bar year. In addition, the chair shall prepare an interim report by February 1 each year for review by the executive committee and the council at their February meetings.
