Special Committee on Lawyer Referral
Mary Benzinger, chair
The Virginia Lawyer Referral Service (VLRS) has provided effective and high-quality legal assistance to the citizens of Virginia, the United States, and abroad since 1977. The VLRS – a public service arm of the bar – offers toll-free and Richmond-area phone numbers that receive more than 22,000 calls yearly from persons in need of legal assistance with matters in Virginia. Through professional customer service, the VLRS strives to promote the image of the legal profession.
The VLRS promotes the image of the legal profession by recruiting those Virginia State Bar (VSB) members in good standing with current malpractice insurance to volunteer their service and legal expertise to the pre-paid referrals (up to a 30-minute consultation) thru the VLRS. From July 2009 to June 2010, the VLRS staff and Committee members recruitment efforts has been to attend the Virginia State Bar (VSB) Admission and Orientation Ceremony, the VSB Annual Meeting, VSB Access to Legal Services Programs, and multiples VSB Conference of Local Bar Association (CLBA) Solo & Small-Firm Practitioners Forums to enhance the awareness of the services of VLRS. VLRS values its long standing panel members for their service and dedication; and welcomes its 93 newest panel members this fiscal year
The VLRS continues in that effort of promoting the legal profession through consumer service by providing more than 5,100 pre-screened and prepaid referrals to its 626 panel members the 2009 – 2010 fiscal year. Over fifty percent of those referrals have resulted in ongoing legal services to our panel members.
