General Practice Section
Grayson S. Johnson, chair
The General Practice Section continues to serve the needs of attorneys in the general practice of law and has done so since 1986. We continue to conduct legal education seminars and other activities to enhance the skills of Virginia lawyers.
As it has done in the past, the General Practice Section co-sponsored with the Young Lawyers Conference on the First Day in Practice Seminar in Richmond. The program provided a full day of seminars in thirteen areas of law. The speakers were highly experienced in their fields, and we also enjoyed the participation of state and federal judges. The sessions were well attended and well received.
At the June 2013 Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach, the General Practice Section co-sponsored a seminar with the Bankruptcy Law Section and the Virginia Creditors Bar Association on the topic: “How Strong are the Trustee’s Section 544 Strong Arm Powers?”
In addition, the General Practice Section presented its annual Tradition of Excellence Award, which recognizes an outstanding lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence in the practice of law in Virginia. This year the award was presented to W. Joseph Owen III, a general practice lawyer in Midlothian.
The General Practice Section continues to maintain a website to provide information to our members and notifications of upcoming seminars and other activities.
There are currently 671 attorney members and 98 judicial members of the section. Our budget for fiscal 2013 was $25,500.
We continue to work closely with Catherine D. Huband, our section liaison, who has been extremely helpful and effective.
