General Practice Section
Jeffrey C. Flax, chair
The General Practice Section continues serve the needs of attorneys in the general practice of law and has done so since 1986. We continue to conduct legal education seminars and other activities to enhance the skills of Virginia lawyers.
As it has done in the past, the General Practice Section cosponsored with the Young Lawyers Conference the First Day in Practice Seminar in Richmond. The program provided a full day of seminars in thirteen areas of law. The speakers were highly experienced in their fields, and we also enjoyed the participation of state and federal judges. The sessions were well attended and well received.
At the June 2011 Virginia State Bar Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach, the General Practice Section cosponsored a seminar with the Senior Lawyers Section on two topics: “Making Sense of the Numbers: An Accounting and Finance Primer for Attorneys” and “The Devil Wore Green,” an interactive trust accounting program.
In addition, the General Practice Section presented its annual Tradition Of Excellence Award, which recognizes an outstanding lawyer who embodies the highest tradition of personal and professional excellence in the practice of law in Virginia. This year the award was presented to James J. Knicely, a general practice lawyer in Williamsburg.
The General Practice Section continues to maintain a website to provide information to our members and notifications of upcoming seminars and other activities.
There are currently 992 attorney members and 99 judicial members of the section. Our budget for fiscal 2011 was $27,990.
We continue to work closely with Catherine D. Huband, our section liaison, who has been extremely helpful and effective.
