Family Law Section

Richard E. Garriott, Jr., Chair

The Virginia State Bar Family Law Section, once again, had a very active and engaging year. It has been an honor to serve as Chair of this exceptional section. Once again, we had a very large attendance at our Annual Advanced Family Law Seminar held in April at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. Additionally, we awarded a lifetime achievement award, given annually in honor of our past Chair and founder of the Family Law Section, Betty Thompson, to Betty Sandler of Woodbridge. Additionally, the annual service award was given to Colleen Quinn of Richmond.

In October of 2014 we once again had our Family Law CLE in sessions in Fairfax, Richmond, and Norfolk.

During the past year, we have continued to study the effectiveness of the current Guardian ad litem system in Virginia and to compile information on the feasibility of utilizing spousal support guidelines in addition to continuing to publish the Virginia Family Law Quarterly which has been an extreme success.

Effective July 1st, Chuck Powers of Richmond will be Chair of the section with Dan Gray of Fairfax as Vice Chair and Larry Vance of Winchester as Secretary.

Finally, we are still the 3rd largest section of the State Bar with 2,101 members which was a growth of 65 members from last year. Once again, we enacted a budget of $ 35,800.00 and as usual, we spent the entire amount through the past year. Due to a reconfiguration of the Board, no new Board members were elected in 2015.  However, there will be additional Board members elected the beginning of the 2016 term.
