Membership
In June 2012, the Corporate Counsel Section had 1,371 members. Based on this total, the section continues to be one of the ten largest sections of the VSB.

Annual Meeting CLE Program
This year, the Corporate Counsel Section joined with the Antitrust, Business Law and International Practice sections to co-sponsor a well-attended continuing legal education program. A panel of three distinguished Virginia lawyers representing both in-house and law firm practice,  John M. Huddle Esq., The Global Law Group; J. Brent Justus, McGuireWoods LLP; and Charles B. Scher, Dominion Resources Services, discussed the topic “Strategies for Successful Compliance Programs: Pitfalls and Traps for the Unwary”

The program provided insights and strategies essential to business lawyers in light of the multi-faceted regulatory environment impacting virtually every business client.   The benefits, key elements, and common pitfalls in developing and maintaining effective compliance programs and audits in the areas of labor and employment, antitrust, and international transactions were covered along with questions from the audience.

Special Activities in 2011-2012
A major emphasis this past year was the publication and distribution of the 2011-2012 membership directory to all current Corporate Counsel Section members.

The board of governors of the section also solicited membership input and comments for its use in researching and responding to the request by the executive director of the VSB for comments relative to the Supreme Court of Virginia’s proposed amendments to Rule 1A:3.

Member Communication
The Corporate Counsel Section’s electronic mailing list was available to announce section news or events.  Also a welcome letter and section membership solicitation was prepared for inclusion in the materials provided by the VSB office about the fees and events associated with the Supreme Court swearing-in ceremony.

Law Student Seminars
The section continued it practice of hosting panel presentations at the Virginia law schools to share information and insights on corporate counsel practice with all interested students.  The program at William and Mary Law School was enthusiastically received by the students there.  Also, for the third year, the section participated in the University of Richmond Law School’s career progressive dinner hosted by the Office of Career Services.

Annual Corporate Counsel Section Regional Luncheons
Regional member luncheons were again hosted by the Corporate Counsel Section in the Tidewater, Northern Virginia, and Richmond areas and well attended in each area.  All three meetings occurred on May 24, 2012, and involved significant networking opportunities for all in attendance.
