Annual CLE – Fall Program

On November 5-7, 2015, the Section hosted the 36th Annual Fall Program at the Boar’s Head Inn in Charlottesville.  Chaired by members Christopher T. Boynton and Randall H. Wintory, the program offered 12 CLE credits, including 2 hours of ethics.  There were 172 attendees, a growth of two attendees from the 2014 record attendance record and up 11 registrants from 2013.  Continuing the tradition started in 2014, the Section hosted a young lawyers reception on Thursday evening for the arriving Section members.

Annual Activities

On October 7, 2015, the Section hosted a happy hour for Section members in the Northern Virginia area at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse in Tysons Corner.  Membership committee chair Alison R. Mullins organized the Section gathering.  Complimentary happy hour fare was served and a cash bar was available.  Several new Section members joined our group at that gathering.

On June 17, 2016, the Section presented a showcase CLE at the Virginia State Bar’s 78th Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach entitled “Official Acts and Honest Services in the Wake of U.S. v. McDonnell – A Discussion of Permissible Rules of Engagement for Virginia Public Officials and the Public.”  Coordinated by member, Dan Fitch, speakers included the Honorable Thomas K. Norment, Jr., Senate of Virginia, Christopher S. Boynton, Deputy City Attorney, City of Virginia Beach, and private practitioners Thomas T. Cullen, Hunter W. Sims, Jr., and Roger C. Wiley.

In combination with Virginia CLE, the Section has planned and will present on September 8, 2016 in Fairfax a new CLE offering entitled “Federal Government Contracting:  Essential Survival Training.”  This half-day program, chaired by Michael A. Branca, will include several in-house counsel presenters, Section members Elizabeth Gill and J. Michael Littlejohn, as well as private practitioners and Section members Daniel J. Donohue, Stephen M. Seeger and Doug Patin.

The Section continues to actively contribute to the improvement of the practice of law in the area of written publications.  In addition to upgrading the usability of the Section’s Construction Law Handbook by adding hyperlink searching capabilities, committee chairman Scott Kowalski continued the precedent of accomplishing twice annual updates to the Handbook content.  In addition, the Section issued three editions (Spring, Fall and Winter) of the Section newsletter, under the editorship of Hanna Lee Blake and Jesse S. Keene, and published multiple articles on construction law written by our members and edited by Arnie B. Mason in the December edition of the Virginia Lawyers Weekly.
