Minutes of the Seventy-first Annual Meeting
President Manuel A. Capsalis called the General Session of the Seventy-first Annual Meeting of the Virginia State Bar to order at 9:05 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Cavalier Beach Club, adjacent to the Cavalier Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach. He introduced Jon D. Huddleston, the incoming president, who had been sworn in by the Honorable Burke F. McCahill, judge of the Loudoun County Circuit Court, the previous evening. Mr. Huddleston reported on the actions of the VSB Council at its meeting on June 18.
Introduction of President-elect Blank
Mr. Huddleston introduced Irving M. Blank of Richmond, incoming president-elect. Mr. Blank made brief remarks. On motion made, seconded and unanimously approved, Irving M. Blank was formally elected as president-elect for the 2009-10 bar year.
Tradition of Excellence Award
Marilynn C. Goss of Richmond received the General Practice Section’s Tradition of Excellence Award. Jon Huddleston made introductory remarks and made the presentation of the award. The award is given each year by the General Practice Section to a lawyer who exemplifies outstanding professional and public service.
Virginia CLE Gardner G. DeMallie Award
Gary Wilbert presented the Gardner G. DeMallie award to Peter J. Kenny of Charlottesville.
Lawyers Helping Lawyers James R. Treece Award
Mr. Robert Fitzgerald accepted the award on behalf of Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald LLP. David P. Bobzien presented the award to the firm in recognition of its leadership in Lawyers Helping Lawyers’s effort to address and overcome substance abuse within the profession
Mr. Capsalis recognized the attorneys who have achieved fifty years of service as members in good standing of the Virginia State Bar. The fifty-year award recipients and their families were invited to attend a special breakfast in their honor, where certificates were presented to each recipient. Photographs were taken of the recipients.
