Message From The Chair

Mary C. Malone, Esquire
Crews & Hancock, P.L.C.

The 1999-2000 Virginia State Bar year is quickly drawing to a close as is my tenure as the Chair of the Board of Governors for the Health Law Section. I have greatly enjoyed serving in this position and feel that our Section has continued to move in a positive direction, providing support and relevant information to our members who practice in the area of health care law.

The Health Law Section accomplished much this in the past year. Last month, Susan Ward graciously agreed to present what has become the Section’s annual Health Law Legislative Update at the Virginia Hospital and Health Care Association in Richmond. The program was, as always, very informative, providing an up-to-date summary of the new health law legislation which may affect various health care providers in Virginia. We thank Susan for her time and talent. We also greatly appreciate the efforts of Tom Stallings, past Chair of the Section, who helped organize and obtain CLE credit for the program.

Serving as secretary for the Health Law Board of Governors and as editor of Health Law News, Jim Daniel continued to make great contributions to our Section this year. Last year, Jim spent many hours researching the feasibility and options for a Section website. This year, thanks to Jim’s continued work on this project, the Health Law Section website is a reality. We have received a lot of positive feedback on the website and encourage all members to use the website and offer suggestions for additions or improvements to the site.

We also thank Jim for putting together a great newsletter for our section. I think that you will find that the articles included in this edition of Health Law News interesting and timely. We encourage members to contribute articles to future editions of the newsletter. In addition, requests for articles you would like to see in Health Law News can be e-mailed to jdaniel@crewshancock.com.

Bruce Stockberger served as the vice chair of the Section’s Board of Governors. I appreciate all of Bruce’s assistance throughout the past year. Bruce was responsible for putting together this year’s VSB Annual Meeting Program. This program is scheduled for Friday, June 16, 2000 during the 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 a.m. time slot. Our Section is co-sponsoring a program with the Antitrust, Franchise & Trade Regulation Section. The program is entitled "When the Government Knocks: Surviving Federal Criminal Investigations." With the current enforcement climate in the health care industry, this program is sure to be a "must" for attorneys who represent health care clients. The program offers 1.5 hours of CLE credit with 0.5 hours of Ethics credit (pending). We look forward to a strong turn out for this program by our Section members. A brief Section meeting will follow the program.

Finally, I would like to thank Elizabeth Keller who serves as our VSB section liaison, Bet was been of great help to me during my term as Section Chair and always provides tireless support to our Section.

I have enjoyed serving as chair for the VSB Health Law Board of Governors. It has given me a great opportunity to get to know and work with many wonderful people. The Section continues to grow and prosper and I extend my best wishes and encouragement for a good 2000-2001. Thank you for providing me with the experience of serving as our Section Chair.
