From The Chair

C. Malone, Esquire
Crews & Hancock, P.L.C.
The
health care industry continues to be at the forefront of both
national and local news. Not only are providers of the
health care industry being targeted by the government
for investigations into non-compliance with the vast number of
complex statues and regulations affecting health care
facilities and individual providers, the industry is now
bracing itself to deal with questions and criticisms related
to quality of patient care being delivered in the United
States. Health care providers in Virginia are not immune
to these increasing pressures. In light of increasing
complexity of providing legal representation to health care
clients, the Health Law Section of the Virginia State Bar
("VSB") continues to strive to provide meaningful
assistance to its members to help them better serve their
clients through publication of our sections newsletter, Health
Law News, and development of educational opportunities.
Currently,
Bruce Stockberger, who serves as Vice Chair of the Health Law
Section's Board of Governors, is in the process of examining
potential educational programs for the section. Members
are encouraged to contact Bruce with ideas or requests for
seminars which may be considered timely and helpful to the
membership. Jim Daniel is currently serving as Secretary
of Health Law Section's Board of Governors and is also the
Editor of Health Law News. On Jim's behalf, I
would encourage members to consider submission of articles on
topics that may be of interest to the membership of the Health
Law Section. The addresses and telephone numbers for
both Bruce and Jim are available on the website (www.vsb.org/sections/hl)
for the section.
The
Health Law Section's new website is a very exciting
development. All future editions of Health Law News
will be made available on the site. Although this issue
of the newsletter is made available to the general public,
future issues will be made available only to members of the
VSB Health Law Section through password protection. More
details regarding member access to the newsletter and other
special services will be provided in the future. Other
ways to use the website to assist members of the section
are being planned. For example, information regarding
educational programs and special publications, such as the
Health Law Agency and Trade Association Compendium, will be
available on the website. Members with ideas for using
the website are encouraged to contract Bruce, Jim, or me so
that the website will continue to develop as a valuable
section resource.
I
look forward to serving as Chair of the VSB Health Law Section
this year and welcome your comments, questions, and
suggestions that the Section can continue to provide valuable
assistance to its members as we move forward into the new
century.
