The Corporate Legal Resources Department in Richmond, Virginia consists of ten attorneys under the supervision of the Company's General Counsel. The attorneys handle the following types of legal matters for the Company: corporate governance, contract review, regulatory, licensing, mergers & acquisitions (including joint ventures), employment, intellectual property, treasury related work (loans and legal needs relating to credit facility), non-claims litigation management, agent-relations and general representation of service/product lines.
In addition to the Corporate Legal Resources Department, LandAmerica employs many attorneys in its offices throughout the United States. These state and regional counsel handle primarily underwriting and claims work associated with LandAmerica's title insurance business.
Description of Internship:
Placement with the LandAmerica Corporate Legal Resources Department will provide the intern with exposure to (i) general contract issues; (ii) corporate governance issues in the context of maintaining records as a corporate secretary; (iii) mergers and acquisitions practice (including joint ventures and divestitures); and (iv) various employment and intellectual property matters (namely reviewing and preparing employment and licensing agreements). The intern will be involved in legal research, contract review and preparation of correspondence, corporate resolutions and documents. The intern will also participate in conference calls, planning meetings and other business meetings. LandAmerica's Corporate Resources Department would prefer to have a full time intern, but may consider part time applications for a minimum of two days per week, depending on applications received. The placement is unpaid.
Required / Preferred Courses and Background:
LandAmerica's Corporate Legal Resources Department does not employ attorneys without prior work experience, so students entering their third year rather than second years are probably better suited for this placement. Also, some real estate experience is helpful, but not required.
